Turning back the clock at this endurance icon

Hugo Garritsen, Pierre Goossens

On Sunday July 9 at 4:00 pm, the third edition of the Le Mans Classic come to an end, with the finish of the race for Class 6. It had been a busy several days, with races running around the clock. The entire event was a huge success, and even though the Goodwood Festival of Speed was taking place on the same weekend in England, the crowds were large at over 65,000, and the number of eligible cars was astounding.

Historics in America pit old time rivals - good fun and food racing

David Seibert, Melanie Cornel

Following on the initial success of the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge in Europe, the series made its way to America, where it had to overcome some hurdles, the main one being the great distances to be traveled in the country to get to each race venue, unlike Europe where a day's drive brings you to any track you wish to visit.

The 1931 Circuito delle Tre Province

In the immediate post World War I period in Italy, there were few competitive opportunities for cars but plenty of young men anxious to participate, mostly in stripped down road cars. One of these was Enzo Ferrari, from the Modena region, who raced CMN and Isotta Fraschini cars initially, but almost exclusively Alfa Romeo after 1920. In the early 1920s, he was based in Milano working for racing driver Antonio Ascari in his Alfa Romeo dealership.

The 166 MM Spyder with coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring was the model on the Ferrari stand at the 1948 Turin Salon, and soon earned the nickname "barchetta", Italian for "small boat," because of the waist line swag from which the lower body fell away and rolled under the car, giving the impression of the lines of a boat. The nickname stuck, and this style of body, which also graced later Ferrari models, is always referred to as a barchetta.

Marcel Massini

With the visit of Michael Schumacher during the 8th Ferrari Racing Days at the Nurburgring, a fabulous Ferrari meeting came to an end. On Sunday, Ferrari's Formula One race driver fascinated spectators and visitors alike with spectacular demonstrations of his driving prowess. He presented the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano very dynamically, and he used his F2005 Formula One single seater for a series of racing starts, rubber-laying donuts, and a couple of very fast laps.

They say it takes a British Lord to pull this off, but pull it off Lord March does, both this event and the even larger Festival of Speed two months prior. Both are held on his estate, in sight of the famous Goodwood House, and while the Festival uses the main drive for all its motoring activity, the Revival uses the equally famous racetrack nearby. What began as a World War II airfield became a truly international race car venue from 1948 to 1964.

3r Montreux GT Ferrari, Montreux, Switzerland - July 22-23, 2006

Pierre Goossens, Marcel Massini

Montreux is a lovely small town beside the beautiful Lac Léman in magnificent Switzerland. In 1934, the first Grand Prix Automobile de Montreux was held, on June 3, and was won by an Alfa Romeo of the Scuderia Ferrari.
In memory of this inaugural race, events were held here in 1990 and 2002, and this year on July 22-23, the third Montreux Grand Prix Ferrari took place.

Michael T. Lynch

At the end of World War II, motoring enthusiasts were anxious to get back to racing and sporting cars, something the world had no use for during the years of conflict. This post-war euphoric optimism led to many ambitious projects like the British BRM, French CTA-Arsenal, German Porsche and Italian Ferrari.
Europe and England did not realise how much damage the war had done, both economically and psychologically, and most new marques failed.

It was in May of 1947 when the first Ferrari dressed the gates of the firm in Maranello where, since then, all Ferrari automobiles have been produced. Since then, these cars have represented the best of Italian design and engineering. A watch with a Ferrari logo on the dial needs necessarily to reflect this unique excellence. For this reason for Ferrari a precious Italian know-how, in terms of technological skills and creativity in watch making.

The heart of a Ferrari is the engine, of course, and without question one of the most famous Ferraris ever made is the 250 GTO. Recently announced was the availability of a 1:6 scale replica of the heart of that car, the 250 GTO V-12 engine.
Authorised by Ferrari SpA, this new hand assembled model embodies a very sincere and strict focus on detail, and as a result, is truly impressive.

There are always several ways to kick off the event packed vintage car festival each August on California's Monterey Peninsula, and next year you can do it with Doug and Genie Freedman's Tuesday car show on Carmel's Ocean Avenue. But for this year, about the best way to start everything, was the two day Quail Rally out of Carmel Valley. The rally welcomed thirty special cars that were among those posing on the Quail Lodge lawn at the following Friday's motorsports gathering.

The Monterey weekend has again consumed an enormous amount of everyone's time, energy, and money, with complaints before, during and after about all the hardships to be endured, but in the end, it is still the premier showcase for everything that is important in the automotive field, particularly as it concentrates on old and new foreign cars. The main grievance, of course, is the sheer number of separate events taking place.

I had been looking specifically for a 328 GTB for awhile. The lines of the berlinetta are by far some of the best that Ferrari has ever manufactured, with that flowing uninterrupted rood line up and over the car being spectacular. It is low, aggressive, and very purpose built, in that there is none of the frame flexing and body rattle attributed to the 328 GTSs.

Plus the market as of December 1, 2006... from a survey of selected dealers

Keith Bluemel

The Ferrari market is showing some healthy gains as of late, not crazy gains like the boiling American muscle car and hot rot markets, but that's a good thing, since many market watchers think that latter market is overly hot and headed for a fall. All the right Ferraris, the really collectible ones with good provenance, are doing very well, as they are being carried aloft by that flow of money that is finding its way from other parts of the globe to Europe and America, for a safe haven.
